    Steam cleaners are great for cleaning carpets and upholstery. You can rent one at most supermarkets for about $20 per day.

    Most steam cleaners use a three-part system. First the machine sprays a cleaning solution onto the carpet. Then an agitating brush works the cleaner into the carpet fibers. Finally, a vacuum system sucks up the dirty solution and stores it in a reservoir for disposal.

    If you'd like to have a cleaner on hand for emergencies, you can purchase small units (figure A) for about $50. Larger household models usually cost $100 to $300.
